LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR WASHER

Permanent Press Cycle. On some washers, a permanent press control programs the proper washer sequence for permanent press fabrics; on others, the wash temperature, the rinse washer temperature, and agitation and spin speeds must be set separately at the beginning of the wash. Either way, a cold rinse is always added before or at the start of a slow spin for water extraction. Permanent press fabrics tend to wrinkle if the clothes are spun without first being cooled or if they are spun too fast. If you launder a lot of permanent press fabrics, choose a washer that has a permanent press cycle.
Delicate or Knit Cycles. Delicate or knit cycles offer protection against fabric damage by providing a warm-water wash, washer slow agitation, and a washer slow spin. In washer without these cycles, you can get good results by setting the washer controls with the combination previously mentioned.
Pre-Soak. A pre-soak washer control is useful if you frequently launder clothes that are exceptionally dirty or that contain food soil. Different brands of washers have different pre-soak time selections that range from five minutes to overnight- To use enzyme pre-soakers effectively, the clothes must soak at least 30 minutes and preferably longer. Some washers advance automatically from soaking to washing. If your washer does not have a pre-soak control, you can presoak by filling the tub of soiled clothes with warm water and detergent or enzyme presoaked and then turning off the washer.
Pre-Wash. Also effective for heavily soiled clothes is a pre-wash action in which the clothes are agitated or tumbled up to five minutes in warm water and detergent. Some washers with this feature first pre-wash the clothes, then spin out the used water, and later advance automatically into the wash cycle. Such washers also automatically dispense detergent with the wash operation. If you do not buy a washer with a pre-wash control, but occasionally have heavily soiled clothes, put the wash load in the washer with warm water and detergent and set the control for rinse. This provides a short period of agitation, or tumbling, plus water extraction. Then reset the washer for regular wash.
Programmed Cycle. Some washers are so automatic that, by selecting a single control, you can program the wash and rinse water 0 temperatures and the agitation and spin speeds. These washers usually have the controls labeled according to types of wash loads: delicate; delicate permanent press; sturdy permanent press; regular no colorfast; regular white; and colorfast . These washers are the most expensive to buy.
