LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR OVEN
Safety is especially important in the kitchen. A
gas oven is CM excellent, but potentially lethal appliance. The
kitchen is the heart of the home. Every year, over 100,000 fires
are reported to be started by cooking equipment, so take a little
extra time, money and effort to make your kitchen safe. Here are
some "musts."
Do install two gas shutoffs. When installing a gas oven, have the
installer put in two shut off valves on the gas line. One in the
basement oil the black iron pipe. The other should go on the flexible
line directly behind the oven. That way, if a fire starts, you can
shut off all burners immediately. Turn off the line behind the oven
first, then go downstairs and also turn off the gas at the black
pipe source.
Do make sure that there are no highly flammable objects hanging
from cupboards or walls directly above the burners.
Do install both a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher. Remember,
when you have a gas oven you are literally "playing with fire."
Every kitchen should have a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher.
When you have gas, a high priced detector that also detects carbon
monoxide and leaking gas is a good idea. There are many cheap detectors
oil the market. Your family is too important to buy the cheap stuff.
Field tests have shown that tip to 40% of some brands are ineffective.
Don't slam the oven door. This is certainly a
case where a lot of people do not know their own strength. A slammed
oven door can spring the door and throw the thermostat out of whack.
Make sure that you do not use the open oven door like a shelf. Oven
doors were not meant to support heavy roasts. Using the door for
a shelf can spring the door and can cause an expensive repair.
