LEARN ABOUT YOUR DISHWASHER

The purpose of a dishwasher is to save you time and relieve you of a chore. To accomplish that task, most home dishwashers are built and operate in much the same way. Dishwashers wash by spraying a solution of detergent and hot water over dishes; rinse by flushing them with clean, hot water; and dry them with heated air.

Dishwashers are classified as portable dishwashers, built-in dishwashers, or convertible dishwashers, depending on whether they are readily movable, permanently installed, or movable but adaptable to permanent installation. The built-in type dishwashers is approximately 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 34 inches high. Some portable dishwashers are slightly smaller than built-in dishwasher models; some convertible dishwashers are larger.

In selecting a portable dishwasher, built-in dishwasher, or convertible dishwasher, consider whether you own your home or are renting. Measure the space available near a water supply and drain, and examine the arrangement of appliances in your kitchen.

Water Temperature. For dishwasher effective cleaning, the water that enters the dishwasher from your home water heater should be between 140° F. and 160° F. A household water heater usually has a thermostat that indicates the temperature of the water it is providing. Some dishwashers have a booster heater.

Cycles. The complete washing, rinsing, and drying actions of a dishwasher make up the dishwashing cycle. Cycles differ from dishwasher brand to brand of dishwasher in sequence, number, and length of time of actions. This results in special cycles for special purposes. The principal special cycles and their functions are as follows:

Rinse and hold. Dishes are sprayed by the rinsing action, the water is pumped out the drain, and the dishwasher stops. The cycle is used to rinse dishes that you want to hold in the dishwasher until you accumulate a full load for a complete wash.

Pots and pans. This may also be called power wash, super scrub, or a similar name. In most dishwashers it extends the time of one or more of the washes.

Short cycle. This option, also called minicycle or short wash, adjusts the dishwasher to the final wash, one or two rinses, and drying. It is used for small loads or lightly soiled dishes.

Soak cycle. One type of soak cycle extends dishwasher wash action. Another stops the dishwasher after the first wash and keeps pans and utensils in the high humidity of the tub for 10 or 12 minutes before the cycle continues. Soak cycles are for extra-dirty dishes, heavier than normal loads, and pots and pans.
